A2 Conversation Questions for Young Learners (7-9)

Seven to nine year olds at A2 level can answer simple questions and talk about things they like, but they need prompts that are concrete and fun. These 75 questions are designed around the world of a young child: pets, food, games, family, school, colours, seasons, and imagination. Every question can be answered with basic vocabulary and simple structures, but the 8 vocabulary items per question invite children to stretch their answers beyond single words.

At this age, conversation practice is as much about building positive associations with speaking English as it is about language development. If a child enjoys talking about their favourite animal and learns the word 'fluffy' in the process, both goals are achieved. The questions avoid anything that could cause anxiety and focus entirely on topics that make children want to share.

Speaking practice with young children

Young learners at A2 can sustain a speaking turn for about 30-45 seconds before running out of language. Plan for very short pair exchanges and cycle through many questions. The rapid variety keeps children engaged and gives them multiple opportunities to succeed. Celebrate attempts rather than correcting errors in the moment.

Keeping it short and joyful

Pair work with 7-9 year olds needs more structure than with older students. Clearly demonstrate what you expect: 'Student A asks the question, Student B answers, then swap.' Model it yourself first. In YapYapGo, the large question display on screen gives both students a clear shared focus, which helps young learners stay on task.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, with structure. Model the activity clearly, keep turns very short (30-45 seconds), and pair students who work well together. Young learners are naturally social and often enjoy speaking to a partner more than answering the teacher individually.
If children can answer these questions fluently with extended responses, they may be ready for B1 level. The vocabulary items help determine this: if students already know all 8 items, they need more challenge.
At A2, the vocabulary items are particularly helpful because young learners have small productive vocabularies. The items give them specific new words to use in their answers, turning 'I like cats' into 'I like cats because they are fluffy and playful.'
