A2 Sport Discussion Questions for Young Learners (7-9)
Seven- to nine-year-olds live for physical play. Running, jumping, kicking, throwing: their bodies are their primary mode of expression. These 50 questions bring that physical energy into English by asking about favourite sports, PE activities, playground games, and what makes a game fun. At A2, the questions stay concrete and personal: 'What is your favourite sport?' 'Can you swim?' 'Do you like running?' Every child has answers to these questions.
The vocabulary is physical and active: 'ball,' 'team,' 'run,' 'jump,' 'swim,' and 'win.' These are words that 7-9 year olds can demonstrate with their bodies, which creates a multisensory learning experience. A child who says 'I can jump very high' while bouncing in their seat is encoding the vocabulary through movement and language simultaneously.
From physical play to spoken English
For A2 young learners, sport discussions work best when they are short and high-energy. Give pairs 30-45 seconds per question, then switch. The rapid pace matches their attention span and produces more total speaking turns than longer, slower discussions. Use YapYapGo's timer to keep transitions snappy.
Words you can act out
Sport questions are natural companions to movement activities. After a game of Simon Says or a running exercise, ask pairs to discuss their favourite sport for one minute. The physical warm-up primes the language centres and children transition into English speech more readily when their bodies are already engaged.
